Fundraising Wrap Up

Thank you to everyone who has supported our ongoing point-of-sale fundraising programs this year. Thanks to your participation in programs like Target’s Take Charge of Education, Fry’s VIP Cool Cash, Fry’s Reloadable Gift Cards, Fresh & Easy Shop for School, Boxtops for Schools and others, we have raised over $4,000 this year. These funds supported class trips and are also being used to purchase rakes and shovels for the students to use in the garden.

Here are some ways you can help DMS continue to raise funds over the summer:

Get your reloadable Fry’s gift card in the office now. This program allows you to earn credit toward future school fees AND raise money for DMS. One family earned over $200 toward school fees in just six months. For details about this program, click here.

Stop by the school office to purchase some scrip gift cards. Right now we have cards for Whole Foods, Sprouts, Starbucks, Amazon, Chipotle, Dick’s Sporting Goods, Walgreens, REI, Michael’s, Jo-Ann Fabrics, and more. If you shop at any of these stores regularly, you need to be buying scrip!

If you shop at Target but don’t have a Red Card or debit card yet, click here to learn how to sign up. We now have 30 families signed up for the Target Take Charge of Education program. Let’s make it 40 by the end of the summer!

High School Update
The first DMS 12th Grade Play – May 19th!
We, the twelfth grade, would like to invite the Desert Marigold community to the first ever senior play! Throughout our time at DMS we have regularly participated in theatre productions in class, and to end our whole experience at Desert Marigold we have been working diligently to present to you the result of our efforts. The play is the wonderful comedy, “The Curious Savage”, (first performed in 1950), by John Patrick. The main theme of the play is that the virtues of kindness and affection can still win the day in a world that often seems motivated by only greed and dishonesty. The play is suitable for Grade 3 and older.

As the very first graduating class, we would like to leave with and leave you with a lovely, final performance! If you’d like to join us, we would be delighted to have you at the Studio at Tempe Center for the Arts on Sunday, May 19th, 2013 for two showings either 1:30pm or 5:30pm. Donations accepted at the entrance. We hope you will support our class in our final endeavor and enjoy yourselves too!

Circus WaldorkUs Troupe Annual Circus Performance
Beat the heat and head to the islands for a circus extravaganza: Jamaican Sunset
When: Saturday, May 18, our own Circus WaldorkUs presents its annual circus performance. We also are also thrilled to welcome Steelin’ the Night Away, a local steel drum band. Music starts at 5:30 p.m.
Cost: Tickets are just $2 per person ($10 cap for families) and children 3 and under are free.
Where: From the DMS parking lot, head through the garden to the middle school field and basketball court.
Food and drinks – including tropical popsicles – will be available for sale.
We’ll see you there!

After five long hot productive years (and they say its dry heat), Farmer Tony is going to retire. After the end of this school year I will be setting aside, the back breaking work of daily gardening, to live a more relaxing pace of life. It has been a very important time for me to work, learn and grow along side the children, parents and plants here at DMS. I will miss it all!

On a less mushy note…All this talk of Honey has gotten a lot of interest, if not in honey, then beekeeping. Holly Silcox a parent and garden volunteer is going to suit up (she got her own beekeeping suit online) and will be joining me in the last honey harvest of the session this Saturday morning. So keep your eyes open for the sign, at “drop off”, that tells of “honey for sale”… coming next week.

You asked for it and now we have a harvest from our honey bees. Thanks to the many flowering plants in our garden the bees are rewarding us with their sweet nectar goodness. Honey and bees wax candles will be offered on Saturday May 4, 2013 as apart of the Mercado and May Faire. Come to the garden and the Shade Structure to get your honey from our very own bees. See you there!

Desert Marigold School

Inspired by Waldorf Education

We have had a few cases of head lice reported in the middle school.

Please check your children.

Head lice have become more and more of a problem over the last few years. The
number of children infested with head lice is increasing all across the country.
Control of head lice depends on prompt diagnosis and effective treatment. We
are asking you to check your child(ren) every day for the next fourteen days.

The following are procedures for inspecting your child for head lice:

1. Under bright light begin looking at the back of the head just above the
neck area.

2. Part the hair section by section and look closely for head lice or nits
(eggs). Eggs will usually be located near the scalp. They are tear drop in
shape and cling to the hair shaft. Some say the nits look like a small flax
seed, they can be creamy white, brown, or grey in color.

3. Depending on the length and thickness of the hair, it should take between
5 and 15 minutes to properly inspect a child’s head.

If you suspect your child is infested with head lice or you find any nits within 1”
of the scalp, please notify the school office. Children may not return to school
until they have been treated and are nit free. Any child who had a confirmed
incidence of lice must come to the office to be rechecked before returning to
class. In addition, you should check your entire family, and make sure friends
and carpool “mates” are inspected for head lice as well.

Washing bedding, clothing (especially hats), etc. is essential.

For information on how to treat head lice consult your family physician or a
local pharmacist. The school store sells TLC (Total Lice Control)and Lice
MD shampoos and essential oils (neem, rosemary, lavender..) that can work
as preventatives and we have a specific recipe available, if needed Other
locations that sell treatments can be found at http://www.totallicecontrol.com/
locations.html or http://www.licemd.com.)

If you have access to the Internet, you can obtain information on controlling
head lice from the Arizona Department of Health Services website at: http://
